About Bill Olivas
The artwork of William "Bill" Olivas conveys powerful portraiture of people of all ethnicities. His unique style – a mastery of precision that powerfully captures the essence of human feelings and emotions.

Influenced by early photography, known as daguerreotype photography, Bill's work is distinguished with rich sepia tones creating his unique style. He specializes in the use of Conte, a pastel like chalk which is ground into a fine powder, a binder is added, then it is applied by brush to create his art work. Bill also simulates this effect using mixed mediums, such as ink, watercolor, acrylic and pastels to enhance some of his images.

Bill was born in Alburquerque, New Mexico, and spent his early years surrounded by the Southwest Hispanic and Navaho cultures. He is one-eighth blood Native American himself, and greatly admires the strength of character of the Navaho and Apache Indians. He is fascinated with people of ethnic backgrounds, Hispanic, Native American, and sometimes African-American, he is most interested in the interpretation and the story of life that is portrayed in his work. His images are an expression of life. The subject is not the major part of the work, it's the life he tries to express through it.

Recently, he has been commissioned by the Verizon Amphitheater in San Antonio, Texas, to create 26 larger than life portraits of their performing artists. Some of the subjects are, Tim McGraw, Ken Chesney, Dave Mathews, Aerosmith, Usher, and many others. Bill has painted celebrated Latino images such as Frida Kahlo, Emiliano Zapata, César Chavez, and well-known political civil activists like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Bobby Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy.

Previous commissioned work includes a fantastic 30' mural in Los Banos, California. The mural is a multi-dimensional panel with an ethnicity theme revealing a history of the Mexican heritage and respective ethnic evolutions in America of celebrated political images such as John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., César Chavez and Sitting Bull.

Bill currently lives and works in San Antonio, Texas, and we are very pleased to exhibit his work in our store.
