Repujado or Metal Embossing is inspired in the ancient technique of repoussé which consists in creating a relief design by hammering or pressing the reverse side of a metal surface. In French repoussé means "to push back". Each piece starts from a flat sheet of metal, most often copper or aluminum, but gold, silver, tin and bronze are also suitable for repoussé. A particular design is drawn in albanene paper, using special tools and a glass surface the design is transfer to the metal sheet, then starts the meticulous process of creating the desired relief for each part of the image. When the relief design is complete, the hollow spaces on the back are filled and the front is stained and painted to enhance the details. The final work is sealed and framed. Lorena Angulo has developed her own style of repoussé that is reflected in these one of a kind pieces. To see a detailed close up of Lorena's repujado click here.
