This region has been the cradle of pre-Inca cultures such as the Vicus who's potters were known as the finest ceramic artists in the region thousands of years ago. The tradition and pottery making techniques have been transmitted from generation to generation and the Chulacanas pottery today is true inheritance of the Precolombian art of the Vicus culture. Every piece is hand shaped in clay, burnished with volcanic rock, and decorated with natural dyed engobe (colored liquid clay), and then fired in a wood burning kiln using dried mango leaves to produce the characteristic dark tones. We include here a small sample collection of Chulacanas Pottery. If you are interested in a particular piece feel free to contact us. Sizes are approximate and actual piece may differ in color and finishing from the one shown in the pictures. (Click on the images for an enlarged picture) |
